E3 2008: Massive Action Game E3 Conference Impressions and Views
Get Ready for the Ultimate gaming experience ever!
Zipper Interactive's new massively multiplayer online game made an appearance at the Sony press conference, and we got to take a look at the trailer.
The developer of SOCOM is moving on to bigger territory with Massive Action Game, a new online title for the PlayStation 3 that will support battles with up to 256 players. Players will be split into eight-person teams. There will also be character advancements and character customization. We didn't get to see any in-game footage, but a trailer hints at Battlefield 2-style combat, but on an even bigger scale.
The footage itself showed a huge team mounting an assault on a military base, with the team approaching on foot and in tanks. An epic battle then raged with bullet and rocket fire all around. Eventually, the protecting team managed to protect the base. It was at this moment that the attacking team launched a second attack, with planes taking part in bombing runs and dropping a fresh batch of soldiers with parachutes.
We were disappointed that MAG wasn't shown using in-game footage, but as one of Sony's "beyond holiday season" releases, it may not be in an advanced state. If we get any more information during the show we'll be sure to let you know.

While a Lot of People are Convinced that Resistance 2's 60-Player Online Battles will be Phenomenal, that Feat will Soon be Overshadowed by a more Elaborate Effort in Online Action.
Zipper Interactive, Best Known for Their Work on the SOCOM Series, Revealed a New Project Codenamed, MAG, ((M)assive (A)ction (G)ame) for the PlayStation 3 which will Have the Capacity to Host 256 Players All at the Same Time.

The Developers Said that Their upcoming Game will Have 256 Humans Divided into Teams of 8 (that's 32 Teams) Fighting Free-for-All (FFA) Style in 1 Giant Map. That certainly Sounds Fun, but we Know you're Wondering How Long you'll Have to Wait to Set up Matches.
That Hasn't been Answered Yet, but we Hope the Devs do in Time. Jack Tretton Has Gone Out of his Way to Remind People that They're Accomplishing All this in the PS3's Sophomore Year. What more Could be in the Pipeline as we Go Along ? We'll See

MAG - Best or worst name ever?
"Personally, I think "MAG" is a great name. Albeit generic, it seems to fit the game perfectly. It wouldn't bother me if it was the title of the final product or just an interim thing till a new name is thought up. All I know is when I saw the coverage, went around to everyone I know and said, "MAG FOR PS3 256 PLAYER ONLINE!!!" some changes in undergarments occured."

"What needs to be a concern with so many people able to play is making sure this game doesn't get dubbed "LAG".
"Maybe they can avoid lag by have each PS3 act a part of the server , kinda like Folding Home . Anyhow , they're gonna have to get creative to get this to work well , and for the 256 players to be organized instead of just plain mayhem . "

"They said that there will be groups of 8 with a team captain for each group right? It is entirely possible for each group of 8 to have its completely independent host within themselves that shares information with each other captain, ultimately creating a chain of hosts in the game and not bogging down one individual with the burden of hosting an online game for each of the 256 people. If done right this game could be the greatest thing of all time. If not, it will be the greatest flop of all time. It will be exciting to see how this all pans out in the long run."

Sony saved the final announcement of its E3 keynote for a concept using the placehold title of "MAG: Massive Action Game," Unveiled by Andy Beaudoin from Zipper Interactive, MAG — whose trailer looked like "SOCOM set 15 years into the future," according to our eyes on the scene, will immerse players in large online battles of up to 256 players. The trailer featured multiple terrain types, complex tactics, and sounds very much like a SOCOM MMO at this stage.
Character growth will be accomplished through an advancement tree, which allows players to fine tune their players throughout massive campaigns. "MAG will deliver an intense and long lasting shooter experience," said Beaudoin, who also described the game as "a workout even for the PS3 architecture."
